Zinc Oxide Gives Green Shine To New Photoconductors

Photodetectors -- devices found in cell phones, digital cameras and other consumer gadgets that utilize photoconducting materials -- are a green technology in performance (converting light into electricity), but the manufacture of very powerful photodetectors needs to be improved before they can qualify for solid green status.

This is especially true if photoconducting materials are to be widely used for producing solar energy.

Ovarian Cancers Detected Early May Be Less Aggressive, Questioning Effectiveness Of Screening

The biology of ovarian cancers discovered at an early stage may render them slower growing and less likely to spread than more aggressive cancers, which typically are discovered in an advanced stage, according to a study led by investigators in the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center. This finding has implications for the question of whether screening for ovarian cancer could save lives.

New Wheat Disease Could Spread Faster Than Expected

Both plant and human diseases that can travel with the wind have the potential to spread far more rapidly than has been understood, according to a new study, in findings that pose serious concerns not only for some human diseases but also a new fungus that threatens global wheat production.

The research, done by scientists at Oregon State University and other institutions, concluded that invading diseases do not always progress in an orderly, constant rate. These historical studies of both plant and animal diseases show that some pathogens that can be carried through the air can actually accelerate as they move, and can become widespread problems much faster than had been thought possible.

Mobile Number Portability the Unnecessary Hype

By Mohit Agrawal

Mobile Number Portability (MNP) has been introduced in many developed countries and is now being contemplated in many developing countries. Number portability enables a subscriber to switch between services, locations, or operators while retaining the original telephone number. There are three basic types of number portability: service, location and operator portability. In most of the countries, location portability and service portability are not enforced, and only operator portability is implemented because operator portability is considered essential for fair competition among operators, while location portability and service portability are typically treated as value-added services. When the number portability is only on the mobile platform, it is called mobile number portability (it is a type of operator portability).

Ultrasound as a concept is most commonly used in a nondestructive imaging notion in various medical applications. The Next Generation Internet (NGI)

Last month, I discussed the Semantic Web as one of the three technologies that I think will converge during the next five years to make a significant change in how we live, how we work, how we play, and how we shop. The Semantic Web will know what you want. Your browser will understand the content of the web pages that you surf. You will do things with the Web that you cannot now imagine.

Today, it is as hard to predict the future of the Internet and e-business as it would have been for a Civil War telegraph operator to imagine what we are doing now in communications. We simply can't foresee all the ways that the Internet of the future -- the Next Generation Internet -- will be used or the full impact it will have.

In the last ten years, the Web was born, browsers have emerged and users have grown from 16 million to almost a Billion. It has created hundreds of billions of dollars of economic growth.

The Semantic Web

Do you remember when there were phone booths everywhere? When PCs had 30 Meg hard drives, 512K of memory and PC communication were 2400 bps? When phone messages came on little slips of paper? When Automated Teller Machines were still new technology? News and weather were only on TV at 6 pm and 10 pm. We were angry about gas prices going above $1.00. It was 1985 and there was no commercial Internet, no Web, and those UPC codes were not yet everywhere. Retailing had not changed much in the previous twenty years. Wal-Mart only had 882 stores mostly in the South and few thought that they would be a threat to the big five. There were no supercenter stores.

Just twenty years ago our lives were very different. We have changed how we work, how we play, how we shop. Much of the change has been due to technology developed during that same twenty years. Now most of us can't imagine living without the Web or Cable TV.

One of the products of the continuous and advancing developments in technology is the GPS or Global Positioning System.
